It's that time of year again... The first named storm of the season - Storm Amy - is due to hit on Friday evening bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and possible travel disruptions across parts of the UK.

The UK Met Office has issued Yellow weather warnings covering Northern Ireland, Scotland and parts of Northern England, predicting torrential rain, and gale force winds with gusts of up to 80mph in some areas of North West Scotland.

As a student, it's important that you stay safe - so we've put together a checklist of how to stay safe during storms - take note!

1. Stay Informed & Plan Ahead

  • Watch the Met Office weather warnings and stay updated for your region.

  • Consider delaying non-essential travel - trains, buses, and ferries may be affected.

  • Let flatmates/family know your plans, especially if you live in a flood-prone area.

TOP TIP: Stay connected with Virgin Media M125 Student Broadband for just £23.99 a month.

2. Inside Your Student Home: Reinforce & Prepare

  • Secure windows, balconies, and loose objects (plant pots, bins, bikes).

  • Unplug non-essential electronics to reduce risk in case of power surges or outages.

  • Gather essentials: torch, portable charger, bottled water, blankets, basic first-aid kit.

  • Move valuables to higher ground, especially if flooding is possible.

  • If you’re in a known flood-risk zone, consider using sandbags or check local flood warnings.

TOP TIP: Get free contents insurance and wellbeing services with every package with HOUSR BILLS.

3. Travel Smart (or Don’t Travel)

  • Only travel if absolutely necessary, but if you have to, make sure to charge your phone and carry a power bank, fill up on fuel (maybe even carry some spare), and check live updates for route closures or delays.

  • If a journey is cancelled, check your refund or rebooking rights with the provider.

TOP TIP: If the trains are looking unreliable, don't forget that TOTUM members can get up to 25% off coach travel with National Express.

4. Food, Supplies & Essentials

  • Stock up on non-perishable food (canned goods, pasta, snacks) and extra toiletries.

  • Aim to keep a few days’ medication and medical essentials within reach in case outside travel is limited.

TOP TIP: Stock up on your essentials and pay with TOTUM Cashabck to earn money back when you shop at Sainsbury's.

5. Tech & Connectivity

  • Ensure your devices (laptops, phones) are fully charged before conditions worsen.

  • Use power banks or external battery packs for backup.

  • Save important files to the cloud so you’re not lost during a power outage.

6. Mental Health & Wellbeing

  • Storms can be intimidating. If you feel anxious, stay connected, you can: Call or text a friend or family member, use student support services or your university’s counselling line.

  • Keep routines where you can (study, rest, social time) indoors

Storm Amy is no joke with strong gusts, heavy rain, flooding, and disruptions all possible. But with a little preparation, you can keep yourself, your belongings, and your studies safe. Use the discounts you already have as a TOTUM member to ease costs for food, travel or repairs. Stay weather-aware, act early, and stay calm.
