Woman's Simple Windscreen De-Icing Hack Is Blowing People's Minds
People can't believe how simple yet effective it is!
As temperatures continue to drop below zero over the coming days, many people are having to de-ice their car windscreen for the first time this winter.
And as ever, people are busy discussing their best tips and tricks for shifting that pesky sheet of ice so you can get on your way in the morning.
And while the majority we’ve no doubt heard before, there’s one very simple hack doing the rounds on TikTok that will help you clear your windows in no time, and it’s so simple!
@saraedeutsch shared the trick on her TikTok page, and people were pretty blown away.
She explained: "I do this video every year, when you have a windshield that is frosted over make sure you put your visors down so that it stops the air flow and creates a faster defrost on your windshield.
"If you ever have a sheet of ice or when it's frosted, put this down and it creates a block so that it actually defrosts faster."
Sara captioned the video: "Teen drivers need to know this! Frozen windshield are about to be a thing with all the cold and snow."
And in a separate video, another TikToker explained: "Top tip to defrost windscreen move the sun visor down to circulate the air.”
And it’s fair to say people were very impressed with the advice, with many admitting they’d never even considered it.
One person commented: "I'm sorry a teen driver… I just learnt this at 32 lol.” Another person said: "I’m 48 and I never knew this,” while a third added: “Me, an adult who lives in Canada, learning this for the first time.”
But while this trick is certainly one to give a go, there’s another popular defrosting hack that motoring experts are warning against.
Dorry Potter, an expert at National Scrap Car, explained how there was one particular trick that isn’t such a great idea, urging motorists to be careful when using the method that sees people fill a ziplock bag or sandwich bag with hot or boiling water, before rubbing it over the windscreen.
Speaking to The Express, she said that this can cause ‘cracks’ in the glass, which can get worse over time.
"A hack that circulates every year is using warm water in a zip lock bag and rubbing it on the windscreen,” she said.
"Motorists are advised to be cautious when applying anything heated to their windscreen as the dramatic change in temperature can cause small cracks to appear in the glass which can cause the screen to shatter when another bout of frost arrives.”
Instead, Potter thinks your best bet is to use a windscreen cover, which helps protect your vehicle from frost overnight.
She said: "As temperatures drop the stress of heading out on time due to a frosty car is soon approaching, so it is important for motorists to make sure they are prepared ahead of time.
"One of the best 'hacks' for defrosting windscreens is to prevent the frost from forming on it in the first place.
"Using a windscreen cover will protect the windscreen from frost meaning that there is no need for scraping first thing.
"Simply place the cover on the windscreen in the evening and remove before heading off in the morning.”
She added: "Cardboard, an old towel or sheet can also work but risk being moved by wind, wet weather or just not being held in place properly.
