Families Left Fuming Over 'Eye Watering' Prices Of Chester Zoo Luxury Lodges
"These prices are totally ridiculous... could go on an actual safari abroad."
Chester Zoo has come in for criticism after the prices for its new luxury wildlife lodges were revealed.
The zoo announced that bookings are now open for The Reserve, with the 51 brand new lodges now available for overnight stays.
Boasting rooms with views directly into the giraffe enclosures or across a lakeside area, families were quick to check the booking site when it opened for email subscribers.
However, many were left shocked and disappointed when they saw the prices for the unique wildlife experience.
While Chester Zoo had previously stated that prices would ‘start from £375 a night off season based on two people staying’ people were left open mouthed as the site showed the cheapest prices for dates mid-week in August, during the peak school holiday season, were £576.20 for two people, or from £1,000 for a family of two adults and two children for one night, reports the Manchester Evening News.
For those wanting to stay in a more premium giraffe view lodge, the price is higher again, from £1,319.20 on dates in August based on four people staying, or from £867 for two people.
People were quick to take to the zoo’s Facebook page to let them know what they thought of the prices…
One person wrote: “These prices are totally ridiculous... could go on an actual safari abroad.” Another said: “£1,000 for a family on a Saturday night in August? Do I get to take home a giraffe for that price?”

Someone else wrote: “I know you rely on public funding but I can get plane tickets for two weeks to South Africa for the price for a week (family of six) such a shame I was looking forward to booking for my 30th,” while another commented: “I looked at the prices on the members' link today, absolutely eye-watering. I love you Chester but it's so out of touch for many people at that price.”
In response, a representative from Chester Zoo took to Facebook, saying: “As an international wildlife charity we wholly rely on public funding to carry out our species-saving work.
“The Reserve is the latest way that people may wish to help to directly fund our global conservation projects and make a difference to the future of some amazing, but sadly endangered, species.
“A stay at The Reserve includes so much more than a room for the night. Packages include elements such as a range of exclusive behind-the-scenes and animal experiences, breakfast, dinner and out-of-hours access to the zoo, as well as two-day passes and the chance to view wildlife straight from your lodge balcony.”
When approached for further clarification about the pricing, Chester Zoo explained that they consulted "hospitality experts" to establish the rates, ensuring there's a variety of options to suit different seasons.
A spokesman said: "We've partnered with experts from the hospitality industry to ensure that our pricing is in line with other equivalent experiences in the UK, and overseas, with prices for a stay starting from £375 per night based on two sharing in the low season.
