Netflix has just released the trailer for a new true crime movie which tells the story of a woman who went on a date with a serial killer - after he'd won a gameshow.

Based on a true story, Woman of the Hour is directed by and stars Anna Kendrick as Cheryl Bradshaw - the woman who finds herself sitting across the table from a serial killer - and Daniel Zovatto as murderer, Rodney Alcala.

The pair had been matched on gameshow The Dating Game, however Cheryl is quick to realise that Alcala may not be the ‘catch’ he comes across as.

The trailer shows the couple in a bar, with Cheryl clearly ill at ease. The action then jumps to later on as Alcala asks her for her number which she says she's already given to him. But when he asks her to say it out loud, it's clear she's given him a fake number.

The reality is that Alcala was part-way through his murder spree as a serial killer when he appeared on The Dating Game, already having committed multiple counts of sexual assault - as well as the murder of a 23-year-old woman - and had been sent to prison for child molestation.

After being released, he assaulted a 13-year-old girl and committed several other murders.

It was in 1978 that he appeared on The Dating Game, where he was introduced as a photographer and ended up winning the episode he was on, meaning he was supposed to go on a date. After his TV appearance, Alcala would go on to commit at least three other murders.

Rather than focus on Alcala himself, Woman of the Hour promises to put the serial killer's victims and the lives he ended at the forefront of the movie.

As well as Kendrick and Zovatto, the film also stars Tony Hale, Nicolette Robinson, Autumn Best, Kathryn Gallagher and Kelly Jakle.

The real Rodney Alcalca was arrested on 24 July, 1979 before going through several trials and being sentenced to death more than once, however, following various appeals he eventually died of natural causes in 2021, 42 years to the day after he was arrested.

Woman of the Hour will be streaming from October 18th on Netflix.

And if you really want to get into the serial killer true-crime content, Netflix has just announced who the face of the third season of its true crime series ‘Monster’ is going to be…
