While the majority of people are probably getting in the festive spirit by cosying up with their favourite Christmas movies, a new disaster drama is proving a hit with Netflix viewers.

Warning: Contains some (minor) spoilers!

The streamer has added an epic new disaster series that hs apparently got viewers bingeing every episode in one go…

Four-part Norwegian disaster series, La Palma, follows the story of a family who head over to the Canary Islands for a bit of Christmas sun - a plan which lands them in the middle of something truly terrifying…

According to the show synopsis, a young scientist discovers some incredible worrying volcanic activity coming from La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano, threatening not only the island itself but the entire surrounding eco-system.

“If the volcano erupts, a mountain mass the size of Manhattan might erupt into the sea and cause the largest tsunami the world has ever seen. Will the family manage to escape the disaster of ash, gas and lava in a fight for their lives?”

And the show is proving to be a hit! Currently sitting in second place on Netflix’s 'Most Watched' list, the series has also garnered loads of reactions across social media. One person called it an 'unexpected excellent watch on Netflix, 10/10 stars’ while another wrote:

“You all need to see La Palma series on Netflix. It talks about the existential threat of climate change on a remote island hit by Tsunami. An early warning system was ignored, and innocent people paid the price. It’s never too late to take action NOW to mitigate the impact of climate change in our communities.”

However not everybody was convinced by the show, with many viewers particularly unhappy about one specific element of the show.

“Watched La Palma on Netflix and pure s**t what do you mean she survived a tsunami inside an airplane,” read one scathing review, while another said: “I’m watching La Palma on Netflix, and Sara is so f-ing annoying. What do you mean you want to sacrifice your family over a girl you literally met 2 minutes ago!?!?”

Releasing a hypothetical disaster series during the festive season may seem a little strange you may remember that back in 2021, apocalypse movie ‘Don't Look Up’ shot straight to the top of viewing charts following a December release.

Boasting an impressive cast - with Leonardo DiCaprio starring alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Timothée Chalamet and Jonah Hill among other acting heavyweights, the movie is described as a ‘satirical black comedy intended to warn of our complacency in the face of the climate crisis’.

La Palma is currently available to stream on Netflix.
