Usually known for his charming roles in romantic comedies, Hugh Grant is garnering positive feedback with a new venture into the horror genre.

Slated for UK release on November 1st, Heretic promises a frightful experience for cinema-goers after a debut showing at the Toronto film festival back in September received rave reviews from critics.

Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods - the creative team behind A Quiet Place - Heretic marks Grant’s very first foray as a horror movie lead. Portraying ‘Mr Reed’ the storyline revolves around two missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who attempt to convert a Scottish man, only to find their mission fraught with unexpected dangers.

Played by Sophie Thatcher (Sister Barnes) and Chloe East (Sister Paxton), the two young missionaries are canvassing from door to door trying to recruit new members to their denomination before they land at the altogether too hospitable house of Mr Reed…

Delighted to debate religion with the young women, the pair then become ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse as they find themselves trapped in his home, they must turn to their faith if they want to make it out alive.

The trailer shows the two women attempting to stop people on the street to let them know about the religion, before moving onto door knocks where they encounter Mr Reed, who invites them into his home.

Although it has purposefully tried not to show too much, the trailer still provides plenty of eerie moments, with the trailer receiving 93% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 7.5 out of 10.

However, fans have also been flocking to the comments on YouTube to express their excitement after watching the teaser clip.

One viewer commented: “Not giving away the entire plot or relying on a barrage of jump scares, simply introducing the setting and building the atmosphere. Yeah, that was a well-made trailer.”

Another person said: “I've never been so happy for an actor to outlive their romcom years. Hugh Grant is a powerhouse and he finally gets to show off his range.”

While a third added: “I love what Hugh Grant is doing with his career. Playing on people's perceptions of him must be so much fun!”
