New Netflix Drama Will Retell One Of The ‘Darkest Chapters Of History’
The show comes from the creators of another huge Netflix hit...
If you've been gripped by The Empress on Netflix and are on the lookout for something new to obsess over, we've got some good news for you... The team behind the royal drama is already working on their next big series. And this one looks seriously intense.
The creators of The Empress are developing a brand-new historical drama called Witches (working title), with the ambitious show promising to dive into one of the most chilling periods in European history: the 17th-century witch hunts.
So yes — expect drama, tension, and plenty of dark twists.
A darker side of history
Set in medieval Germany, Witches will follow three sisters caught up in the terrifying reality of the German witch hunts - a period where fear and suspicion could turn neighbour against neighbour overnight.
The story centres on a family torn apart by accusation and betrayal, exploring what it meant to protect the people you love during a time ruled by paranoia and fanaticism. Alongside the historical drama, the show will focus on strong female characters navigating a world where being seen as different was incredibly dangerous.
Netflix says the series is set to be one of the biggest TV productions ever based on this period of European history, so we're expecting a major, cinematic feel.
The same team behind The Empress

The project reunites the creative team behind The Empress, including creators Robert and Katharina Eyssen and producers Sommerhaus. Executive producer Scarlett Lacey is also returning, meaning fans can expect the same sweeping storytelling style that made the royal drama such a hit.
The Empress has become one of Netflix’s most popular European originals, telling the dramatic love story of Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz of Austria. But while that show is all royal romance and palace intrigue, Witches looks set to lean much further into darker territory.
One more season of The Empress to go
Before Witches arrives, fans still have the final season of The Empress to look forward to. Season three — which wrapped filming earlier this year — will be the last chapter of the story and is expected to land on Netflix later in 2026.
Until then, Witches is shaping up to be one to watch — especially if you like your historical dramas with a side of mystery, danger and high-stakes family drama.
Basically, if you thought royal politics were dramatic, wait until you see what happens when witch hunts take centre stage.
