When it comes to entertainment, we’re incredibly blessed - particularly where TV is concerned.
It’s definitely been fascinating to see how interest in TV series has grown over the last few years and it’s perhaps fair to say that they’re even more popular than movies now, gripping audiences all over the world with hard-hitting topics and humour alike.
There’s a TV series for absolutely everyone to sink their teeth into, that’s for sure and certain! And the fact that big-name actors are increasingly keen to showcase their talents on the small screen is all the assurance we need that amazing series are here to stay!
But, with so much choice out there, it can feel a little overwhelming and it’s very easy to start one series and then have your head turned by another, leaving many episodes unfinished and forgotten about.
To stop this from happening, we thought we’d count down some of the very best series out there at the moment on Amazon, Netflix and Sky so that all your bases are covered - all of which TOTUM members can get great deals on!
Of course, if we’ve missed any out or you have any favourites of your own you’d like to shout about, drop us a line to let us know!
What’s On: Amazon
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX
There’s not a huge amount of anime to be found on Amazon Prime Video but when they do it, they do it properly.
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX (pronounced gee-kwux) goes right back to the beginning of it all, asking what would happen if the bad guys had won the war. Expect new characters, amazing visuals and true emotional depth in this latest offering from studio Khara. A great one for the to-watch list.
Slow Horses
One of the best shows on Amazon has to be Slow Horses, starring Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden, Olivia Cooke, Kristin Scott Thomas and many more, telling the tale of some disgraced MI5 agents with lots of deliciously dark humour and cynicism that’s made it a firm fan favourite over the course of four seasons.
What’s On: Netflix
The Four Seasons
An all-star cast heads up this comedy drama miniseries, including Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Kerry Kenney, Colman Domingo and Will Forte, so if you’re looking for something funny with a lot of heart, this is the watch for you!
The story tells the tale of three suburban couples going on holiday season by season, with tensions arising when one couple splits up and the husband starts bringing his younger girlfriend on trips. Expect laughter and tears alike.
Apple Cider Vinegar
True crime stories will always do well on Netflix and this one is particularly compelling, a retelling of what happened when wellness influencer Belle Gibson started to use her digital presence to promote alternative medical practices, fooling the entire world into believing that she cured her (fake) cancer diagnosis without taking scientifically prescribed medication.
Starring Kaitlyn Dever, the series really doesn’t disappoint and you’ll be gripped from start to finish… and, no doubt, you’ll be furiously Googling the facts of the case once you’ve finished watching.
What’s On: Sky
The Last of Us
The much-anticipated return of The Last of Us (based on the acclaimed computer game of the same name) is finally upon us and thus far Season 2 certainly hasn’t disappointed, continuing the story of what happens after a parasitic fungal infection takes hold and transforms people into violent creatures called the Infected.
No spoilers, of course, but you can expect shocking scenes, gruesome action, love, hate, fear, anger… the whole gamut of human emotion, packed up into one-hour episodes.
Poker Face
Who doesn’t love a murder mystery from time to time? If you want to combine crime, comedy and drama, then Poker Face is the show for you, starring Natasha Lyonne as casino worker Charlie Cale who, while on the run, finds herself embroiled in cases involving mysterious deaths of strangers along the way.
The second season has just premiered and, given that the first series came up trumps with a score of 98 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s probably one you don’t want to miss.
Small Town, Big Story
Christina Hendricks of Mad Men fame is back on our small screens once again in Small Town, Big Story, a six-part comedy series set in a rural Northern Irish town. As the story goes, a big Hollywood production rolls into town and inadvertently brings to light a secret that’s been kept well hidden since the eve of the Millennium.
Intrigued? You should be! Also starring Paddy Considine and Eileen Walsh, the show was created by Chris O’Dowd and was filmed on location in Ireland, so it’s worth watching just for the visuals alone. War, witty and dramatic, you’re sure to love the binge watch!
