The FIFA World Cup has given us some of the greatest moments in sporting history. But alongside the dramatic winners, last-minute goals and legendary celebrations, there are plenty of records and facts that sound like they belong in a football-themed fever dream.

From impossible scoring streaks to records that may never be broken, here are ten World Cup facts that are 100% real - even if they sound completely made up... Which one of the ones we've included is...

But can you guess which one?

1. Brazil Went Eight Years Without Losing A World Cup Match

BRAZIL-WORLD-CUP

Brazil remained unbeaten across three separate World Cups between 1958 and 1966, racking up an incredible 13-match unbeaten run.

Considering the tournament only happens every four years, that's almost a decade without tasting defeat on football's biggest stage. Not bad for a team that also won back-to-back titles during the streak.

2. One Player Scored 13 Goals In A Single World Cup

French striker Just Fontaine scored 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup.

To put that into perspective, many Golden Boot winners today don't even reach half that total. Fontaine managed his record in just six matches, and nobody has come close to beating it since.

3. A Goalkeeper Went 623 Minutes Without Conceding

Argentina's goalkeeper, Nery Pumpido, didn't concede a single goal after the first 7 minutes of the 1986 tournament. That's nearly seven full matches as the team, led by the incredible Diego Maradona, went on to lift the trophy on their home turf.

4. Switzerland Once Finished A World Cup Without Conceding A Goal... And Still Didn't Win It

At the 2006 World Cup, Switzerland became the first team ever to leave the tournament without conceding a single goal.

The catch? They were knocked out in the Round of 16 after losing a penalty shootout to Ukraine. Defensively perfect. Trophyless.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo Has Played In Five World Cups... But Never Scored In A Knockout Match

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored goals at five different World Cups, broken countless records and established himself as one of football's greatest-ever players.

Yet despite appearing in knockout matches across five separate tournaments, Ronaldo has never scored a World Cup goal beyond the group stage. For a player who's built a career on delivering in the biggest moments, it's one of football's most surprising statistics.

6. Brazil Are The Only Nation To Qualify For Every World Cup

Since the tournament began in 1930, Brazil have appeared at every single World Cup. No qualification disasters. No shock eliminations. No embarrassing campaigns. They've never missed one.

7. Pelé Won Three World Cups

Many football legends never win a World Cup. Pelé won three. The Brazilian icon lifted the trophy in 1958, 1962 and 1970, making him the only player in history to win three men's World Cups.

8. The World Cup Trophy Was Stolen… And Then Found...

In 1966, just months before England hosted and won the World Cup, the Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen from a public exhibition in London.

A nationwide panic followed, with police investigations underway and the football world in disbelief. Then came the twist: the trophy was discovered wrapped in newspaper under a hedge in south London by a dog named Pickles. Football folklore doesn’t get more unbelievable than that.

9. Olivier Giroud Won The World Cup Without A Single Shot On Target

When France lifted the World Cup in 2018, striker Olivier Giroud played a key role throughout the tournament.

There's just one bizarre detail: despite playing every match and leading the line for the eventual champions, Giroud didn't register a single shot on target all tournament. Not one.

10. One Manager Has Won The World Cup Twice

Italy's Vittorio Pozzo remains the only manager in history to win two World Cups. He led Italy to victory in both 1934 and 1938. Nearly 90 years later, nobody has matched the achievement.

Final Whistle

The World Cup is full of moments that feel impossible, but sometimes the statistics are even more unbelievable than the matches themselves.

Whether it's Brazil refusing to lose for nearly a decade, Switzerland getting knocked out without conceding, or Pelé collecting World Cups like souvenirs, these records prove that football's biggest tournament is often stranger than fiction.

And with the next World Cup around the corner, who knows? We might be about to witness the next fact that sounds completely unreal - oh that reminds me... Number 3 is false, the actual record is held by goalkeeper Walter Zenga who kept a clean sheet for 517 consecutive World Cup minutes for Italy during the 1990 tournament!
