While it’s true that students eat out a lot (and who can blame you guys, with the over-abundance of incredible restaurants we’re blessed with these days, not to mention the late-night post-club ritual kebab and chips), university actually represents the perfect opportunity for you to get into cooking… and you’ll be able to save on spends if you rack up some culinary skills over the next few years.

However, unlike the old adage asserting that a poor workman blames his tools, you’ll want to make sure that you have top-quality kitchen equipment at your disposal if you do want to see cooking success over time.

This is particularly true if you want to turn your hand to baking, which is more of a science than an art… and, here, even the materials your utensils and crockery are made of can have an impact on results. Weird, but true!

We’re not saying you have to compile a kitchen environment that would put Gordon Ramsay to shame, but there are some essentials you’ll likely want to invest in if you do want to cultivate a serious interest in the culinary arts. And once you’ve got a few skills under your belt, you can then start thinking about more luxury items to help you up your game.

So, with this in mind, here are some of the must-have kitchen accessories and equipment that you simply can’t do without. Whipping up a feast for friends and family will be revolutionised, we promise!

Essential kitchen equipment!

Cooking is pretty tricky if you don’t have the appropriate tools within easy reach, but you don’t need to overinvest in order to bring your kitchen up to scratch.

Get your hands on a set of non-stick pans as a top priority, including saucepans and frying pans, so you can cook a range of different dishes simultaneously without having to worry too much about cleaning difficulties after you’ve finished.

Also, having more than one of everything means that you can put off doing the washing-up for at least a day or two! Although, any longer than that and we’re telling your parents…

You’ll also want to make sure that you have a set of good-quality knives, ideally something in stainless steel or similar to prevent rusting and stains. Also look out for knives that are made from one piece of metal, rather than something that has a handle attached to it, as the latter are more prone to breaking.

Chopping boards are a must for cutting produce, of course, or you won’t be getting your deposit back! We advise getting your hands on different coloured boards so you can separate your meat and veg to help prevent cross-contamination.

And, if you really want to prioritise health and hygiene, wood is infinitely better than plastic as it’s self-cleaning and harbours less bacteria.

Other must-haves include a set of wooden spoons, spatulas, a whisk or two, a measuring jug, kitchen scales, some baking trays and dishes, a colander and a cheese grater. And that should all do the veritable trick!
