A top nutritionist has revealed the two foods that she refuses to let her daughters eat.

Dr Federica Amati, Head Nutritionist for health app, ZOE, has explained that although her daughters are exposed to a rich and varied diet, there are some things that remain strictly off limits.

The 37-year-old mother-of-two believes that looking after the microbes in our guts is the key to maintaining our wellbeing, a topic she examines in detail in her book, Every Body Should Know This: The Science of Eating for a Lifetime of Health which was released in April this year.

Dr Amati and her husband - 90s supermodel Paul Sculfor - have two daughters aged six and four, and although she says she doesn’t generally feel the need to 'completely exclude [certain] foods forever' there are a couple of exceptions.

Speaking to The Times, Dr Amati said: “I don’t see any benefit to drinking a cola at any point in life. That’s something that I’m very black and white about. I don’t see any reason for even trying them.

“Fizzy drinks are the worst ultra-processed food that exist. Full of artificial additives, full of sugar. It’s insane how bad they are.”

Dr Amati went on to add that there is one other item that is banned in her home, that many parents mistakenly presume is healthy. “Children’s yoghurts have some of the highest sugar content in the food industry,” she said.

While being conscious of the choices she makes surrounding her children's diet, Dr Amati says her real goal is to ensure that her girls have a 'good relationship with food'.

“I grew up in an Italian household," the Rome-born nutritionist continued. "I’ve always thought of food as a pleasure. There’s no ‘good food’ or ‘bad food’. It’s all part of the food culture.”

While she admits that she doesn’t 'home-make' everything from scratch Dr Amati added: “What I do have is an environment in my home where the majority of the food is whole food.”

But does this mean that no processed food at all is consumed in their household? Not quite - Dr Amati admits that there are guilty pleasures for everyone...

Her husband, for example - who is often dubbed the 'original supermodel' and has dated stars including Lisa Snowdon, Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz 'loves to eats food that makes him feel good’ revealed Dr Amati.

“He just has these quirks, like brown sauce and marmalade and things that are just for him in the house. He’s not drowning every meal in brown sauce, but he will have it on occasion. “There’s no reason to completely exclude foods for ever.”
