Interviews are probably one of the most daunting things you have to do as an adult, and it’s easy for nerves to get the better of us in these situations!

If you have an interview coming up, check out our top ten biggest mistakes that people make in interviews and make sure to avoid them!

But for one boss, it’s not so much what you do, the questions you ask, or even how confident you are that’ll secure you the job.

Australian tech boss, Trent Innes, has come up with a straightforward  test he uses during every interview to decide whether a candidate is the right fit for the role - and it involves coffee.

MD of Xero Australia, Innes says those who fail his test are blacklisted from the company as he sees it as a real red flag in terms of a person’s attitude.

Speaking to business podcast, The Ventures, he said: “I will always take you for a walk down to one of our kitchens and somehow you always end up walking away with a drink.

“Then we take that back, have our interview, and one of the things I'm always looking for at the end of the interview is, does the person doing the interview want to take that empty cup back to the kitchen?

“You can develop skills, you can gain knowledge and experience but it really does come down to attitude, and the attitude that we talk a lot about is the concept of 'wash your coffee cup’."

According to Innes, the test is all about how someone fits in with the 'culture' of a workplace, and claims that his tactic seems to do the trick as the office kitchen is always tidy.

“If you come into the office one day inside Xero, you'll see the kitchens are almost always clean and sparkling and it's very much off that concept of wash your coffee cup,” he said.

"It's really just making sure that they're actually going to fit into the culture inside Xero, and really take on everything that they should be doing."

In other interesting coffee based news, you may want to keep an eye on what your colleagues have in their coffee cups - before they clean them and return them to the cupboard - after a study revealed that people who enjoy drinking black coffee are more likely to be psychopaths.

In a study conducted by a group of researchers at Innsbruck University, Austria, 1,000 adults were questioned about their food preferences, and took personality tests that help detect narcissism, psychopathy, aggression and other traits.

As it turned out, the results suggest that individuals who like bitter foods and liquids (black coffee) are more likely to display sadism and psychopathy.

In addition, as part of the study, the participants were asked to rate a series of statements such as, ‘Given enough provocation, I may hit someone’ – to measure each person’s level of aggression, and assess the personality traits of Machiavellianism, psychopathy and narcissism.

The final task involved completing a Comprehensive Assessment of Sadistic Tendencies – used to evaluate tendencies towards everyday sadism.

The study concluded that:“General bitter taste preferences emerged as a robust predictor for Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism and everyday sadism.”
